The Indian Air Force Chief, VR Chaudhari has announced that the Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) exam has been successfully conducted to select candidates for a groundbreaking new branch known as the Weapon Systems (WS) branch. This exciting initiative is set to guide in a new era of technological prowess within the IAF.
Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari further revealed that approximately 33 officer cadets are poised to be commissioned as WS branch officers by the conclusion of 2024. This visionary step underscores the IAF’s commitment to strengthening its capabilities and ensuring the nation’s defense remains at the forefront of cutting-edge technology.

According to the government release, “The creation of WS branch would entail unification of all weapon system operators under one entity dedicated to the operational employment of all ground-based and specialist airborne weapon systems,” a government press release read.
The branch will include operators in four specialized streams: Surface-to-Surface missiles, Surface-to-Air missiles, Remotely Piloted Aircraft, and Weapon System Operators in twin/multi-crew aircraft.
In a noteworthy development, prospective candidates can now enter the prestigious WS branch via the AFCAT exam. The IAF chief enthusiastically revealed, “We have received full government approval to establish this groundbreaking branch. Just a few weeks ago, the AFCAT exam successfully identified the candidates who will be the inaugural members of this distinguished branch.”
He added that the first batch of approximately 33 officer cadets is slated to commence their training at the academy early next year. These promising individuals will then earn their commissions as officers in the weapon system branch by the end of the following year. This exciting endeavor marks a significant step forward in the evolution of the Indian Air Force, promising to enhance its capabilities and secure the nation’s defense in the years to come.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) has reported that 155 women Agniveers are presently undergoing rigorous training at the IAF training center in Belgaum. According to Air Chief Marshal Chaudhari, “A total of 17 women officers have chosen the fighter branch,” as quoted by ANI.
He further said that the IAF intends to assign its officers as Additional Defence Attaches in Armenia, Spain, and the Ivory Coast. “The IAF will also post a Liaison Officer in the American Pacific Air Command,” the IAF chief.
