Turkey did not close the door to the North Atlantic Alliance for Sweden. This was stated by the representative of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Ibrahim Kalin, assessing the possibility of Sweden becoming part of NATO.
“We did not close the doors to NATO for Sweden,”declaredKalyn in an interview with NTV. He noted that the process of Sweden’s accession to NATO will depend on what actions the country will take after the anti-terrorism law comes into force. He also stated that there are no obstacles for Finland to get into the North Atlantic Alliance.
Earlier, Finland, together with Sweden, applied to join the North Atlantic Alliance on May 18, 2022. The Kremlin expressed regret over the Finnish authorities’ course towards joining NATO. Turkey opposed the expansion of NATO. However, later Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the country was ready to hold a vote in parliament on the approval of Finland’s membership in NATO. The issue of Sweden’s membership in the alliance, according to President Erdogan, depends on the actions of the Swedish authorities.
